This
is a list of some of the paintings I have done, what type of paints
were used and whats wrong with them. If you can spot how something
can be improved then your next painting will be better.

My
first watercolour in 1992. Student colours on watercolour paper
Half
hour
|
|
The
crabs were sketched looking into a pool and coloured later. The
colouring is hesitant, too light |
| A
sketch at a tarn in the Lake District, I painted it while I was
there. Student colours
Half hour |
|
I
dropped the painting twice as it was windy, this made spots on the
painting |
| A
painting done from a photograph I took of lake Windermere so I could
paint it later. Student colours except for the red which was artist
quality. Hour and a half |
|
The
mountains look alright but the tree island is not clear and the
big boat on the left is the wrong size |
| Bolton
Abbey, painted on site with student colours
1 hour |
|
Pretty
obvious that the mound in the centre looks like it is floating.
Needs a shadow and stronger line on the right
|
| Newstead
Abbey 2002, painted on site with student colours
40 minutes |
|
Abbey
looks great to me, but trees seem the wrong size and the road
dominates too much
|
North
Beach, Iona 2000. Artist quality paints and a big brush.
Hour
from a photograph I took
|
|
Sky
looks a little flat. White is masking fluid applied before painting
started. Lot of paint was applied thick, straight from tube
|
Holly
washing car, from a photograph using artist quality paints. Hour
and a half
|
|
The
entire painting is done with indigo. Buit up in layers, each darker
than the next. The hat on the child's head looks like a helmet
|
Chilwell
road. It was a hot summer evening in my art class so I went outside
and painted the street by the artshop. Artist quality paints.
hour
and a half
|
|
The
pencil sketch under the painting is wonky. The perspective looks
odd around the roofs. I was pleased with the brick effect though |
| Lincolnshire
Cafe 2001. Sat in a chair painting this. Took about 55 minutes then
another hour later at home to get the detail right |
|
Painting
looked too flat till I took a chance and put a lot deeper tones
in |
| Charlestown
Harbour Sketch. 2001 Black permanent pen. i sat in the Harbour and
drew this in about an hour |
|
I
was pleased to get the picture focussed around the flagpole. The cliffs
are a bit low on detail |
Charlestown
Harbour from sketch
Artist Quality colours
Took about 3 hours to transfer sketch and colour
|
|
Top
of green hill bled into sky as sky was still wet. Not much detail
on left hand side. Notice the harbour wall is now the focus, not
the flagpole |
| My
Photograph of a bridge in Oxford. |
|
The
river was in flood and I had to kneel down to get the reflections |
| Final
painting of bridge in Oxford
About 3 hours |
|
The
white areas in the water are masked off before painting. the railings
need deeper shadows, sky was an accident but works |
Italian
city at night. This was a simpification of a photo on a magazine.
Took about an hour to start and another hour to finish off two
weeks later
|
|
After
the painting was finished, my wife suggested yellow lights in the
windows. Combined with a yellow wash over the whole picture this
gave the whole thing warmth |
Beeston
Lock in Pencil. I had a photo I had taken of this and I took about
an hour to get the main shapes and later another hour to deepen
shadows and use a wet brush over the watercolour pencils |
 |
Contrast
is a bit low and deeper colours would match the forced perspective
Sky is poorly 'washed' and has lines where the paint dried too quickly |
Beestonlock
in Watercolour. One hour sitting by the river to get the main shapes
and another 30 minutes later to deepen the boat shadows and add
extra 'washes' to the water |
 |
If
you compare this with the previous version above, the perspective
is less pronounced and the distant trees work better. The whole
painting curves down and right though as I am right handed! |
Wicker
bird in pastels. 20 minutes at a museum in Glastonbury |
 |
I
didn't leave enough space around the drawing but generally I am
happy with this one |
Vaughans
catamaran. A commission for my Brother-in-law. I was sent a photo
and used a sheet of glass as a see through mirror to get the shapes
right. In the end I scanned in the photo and fiddled it in PhotoShop |
 |
Extremely
difficult to make the thin linesof the boat stand out against the
background so i used different techniques to add contrast |
Hovis
Cottages. About 2 hours and another hour later with coloured pencils |
 |
This
picture has been overworked. It would look better with half the
time spent on it and a big white border |
Minehead
from beach. An hour on the beach and an hour later addign details |
 |
I
like the lines for teh sand and the detail on the headland but the
whoel painting is twisted to the left slightly. Sea needs more contrast
between close and distant |
Mousehole,
Cornwall. Painted from a postcard of Mousehole durign a big storm
with crashing waves. About 3 hours in total |
 |
I
regret using such heavy lines for the sea as it woudl look better
with all pencil lines erased. Imay redo this picture later |
New
Wine. A holiday diary in picture form. I now have five of these
in my toilet! |
 |
This
picture is high resolution so may takea time to download |
Robin
Hoods Bay. An unfinished traditional painting. About four hours
so far |
 |
Sometimes
a painting can't be finished because I don't know what to do with
it. Eventually I will finish this picture and post a newer scan |
Robin
Hoods Bay. Painted froma photocopy of a picture on the Internet |
 |
The
Internet picture was converted into black and White by photocopying
continously. I think the thick lines are a mistake |
Lighthouse.
From a photograph in a photography magazine. three hours |
 |
The
picture didn't look right until I added lots of deep blue (Indigo)
It is still a bit unfinished as the sea needs a little more work |
St
Ives Bay. Unfinished. Painted on the beach in 30 minutes using a
wet technique and since then 2 more sessions adding 'over washes' |
 |
Still
unfinished. I feel this painting will eventually work but I do not
know what it needs. Might add some white gouache flicked from a
brush for spray |
St
Ives Bay. One hour sitting on the harbour wall, 30 minutes later
tidying lines and adding texture with coloured pencils |
 |
I
had a big argument with someone because I was 'blocking' one of
the three walkways around the sea wall. Dangerous life being an
artist |
Rosie's
first real picture |
 |
Made
into a card |
Rosie's
picture after three short watercolour lessons at the local art shop |
 |
She
did this using a collection of techniques! |
