SMART MATERIALS

I have read a lot about smart materials, but haven't seen any quick and dirty demos of them so I have created these introductory videos.

Video one

Video two

Both around 4MB in Windows Media Player format and recorded with a £12.50 WEBCAM from Argos

I have started with Polymorph as its safe and very useful in most pupils projects. You can mould door handles, buttons, zip pulls, joints and key rings from it with ease.

I will be adding other smart materials by September 2005 including Quantum Tunneling Compound... Wonderful name and revolutionary and cheap stuff for electronics......

The best place to start getting materials and info is TEP. It s wonderful and taught me all I know about them.

Polymorph is about £15 a KG but that is enough to do a pen demonstration with 60 kids.

I recently did a competition where pupils were sold Polymorph at cost in little bags as entry to a monster moulding competition. In the end I only had two entries because no-one wanted to bring their Polymorph back as they had so much fun with it and it had been used for loads of things.

Wonderful demonstration, tell the pupils it is non-toxic, put some in your tea, mould it and then drink the tea........ Worked for me........
