Spaghetti snap
Give pupils 4 lengths of uncooked short spaghetti, tell them to break it up into 20 equal length pieces.
Extra Evil Version: Draw two lines, 20mm and 25mm apart on a piece of paper and tell them the pieces must be between 20mm and 25mm long
Crushed Cube
Give pupils a piece of A4 paper, scissors and sellotape. Tell them to cut and stick the paper and tape to make a 3D open (framework) cube which stands up by itself.
Extra Evil Version: Give only 100mm of sellotape
Ruddy Robots
Fold a piece of A4 paper in half twice, when unfolded this should give you 4 divisions on each side, 8 in total. Pupils have to draw a robot using only rectangles, triangles and circles in each space. Must include a face, Must all be different. For extra evil twist, each rectangle needs to be coloured blue, circles red etc..
Extra, Extra, evil if you fold paper again as this DOUBLES the number of squares
Terrible Tower
Get pupils to build a card pyramid 3 stories high. Extra evil, set an oscillating fan nearby and switch on halfway through...
Picquant Puzzle
Try a traditional puzzle, stress that it is a mathematical detention. Write out for them, with the numbers underlined or highlighted to distract them.
"As I was going to St ives, I met a man with SEVEN wives,
Every wife had SEVEN sacks,
Every Sack Held SEVEN cats,
Every cat had SEVEN kittens.
Kittens, cats, sacks and wives, how many were going to St Ives?
Answer of course... is 1.
Mean measuring
Give 5 straight objects and ask the pupils to line them up so they are exactly 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30cm apart. Measure them and tell them how much out each is. Get them to rearrange them. Particulary good for pupils who forget equipment such as rulers..
Botched Backwards
Photocopy a short piece of text onto clear acetate. Tape to a white sheet and give the pupil a piece of acetate and an overhead pen. they have to copy out the back to front writing perfectly. Halfway through the detention, put their writing on an OHP the correct way round and add 1 minute to their detention for every wrongly written word. Extra Evil, Use a fancy font on the copied text.... (Not for pupils with dyslexia or low literacy skills)
Rockin Rubbers
For pupils who throw small items.
Set a pot or draw a circle on a piece of paper at one end of a bench
Pupils have five throws and for each miss they have to stay two minutes in detention. Like other detentions, the pupils lack of skill causing them to stay annoys them more than you making them stay, even though its the same thing really...
