EVIL DETENTIONS

Evil detentions is a website for teachers and educators. It is not intended to be 'EVIL' but that is the slang phrase used at the moment by pupils I teach to describe a particulary intense, thoughtful or well matched detention.

The site was set up at the start of March 2006 and within 7 weeks had gathered 100,000 page viewings.

In April 2006 three new worksheets hasve been added to give teachers a pre-made set of tasks.

Pupils know the score with normal detentions, 15 or 30 minutes sitting staring at nothing, or writing lines whent hey know alredady whats wrong with their behaviour. The detentions on this website are interesting but often have a sting in the tail. Pressing your nose against a doughnut for 5 minutes and not being able to eat it is a far worse ordeal for the average youngster than 30 minutes writing ' I must not pick my nose and flick it at the girls'. There a bit of humour involved in a lot of them as well, and crucially, they are memorable and involve a little bit of peer ridicule.

At the end of the detention, you will still have to teach the child again unless youre very lucky, so set something which makes a difference, not an enemy.
